Residential Services for YouthSpurwink provides comprehensive residential services for children and adolescents ages 7 – 18 with behavioral and emotional needs. This program offers specialized care in a safe, structured environment and is comprised of 51 community-based therapeutic homes of varying types, from Transition Homes to Staff Secure Treatment Homes. In order to best meet individualized treatment needs, clients are placed with youth of similar ages, developmental issues and cognitive levels. Services provided include: therapeutic milieu; individual, group and family therapy; behavior modification; structured recreational and social activities; and highly individualized special education programs. (The special education program is recommended by the sending school district and may be provided at a Spurwink Day Treatment Program or in a public school.) Spurwink’s homes are individualized to meet the unique needs of each resident. Many homes utilize a unique Therapeutic Parent staffing model. This model offers children consistency and the opportunity to experience and grow within a family-like environment. Other homes utilize the Shift Staff model when that is determined to be more suitable or beneficial for the clients. A wide range of recreational activities are offered to Spurwink residents. Where appropriate, individualized activity programs are developed to help youth overcome gross and fine motor coordination problems. Clients are encouraged to utilize community resources such as Little League, the YMCA and the Boy Scouts. Involvement of parents or legal guardians is considered an essential component of treatment. Unless clinically contraindicated, home visits for weekends and holidays are encouraged and supported, as is regular consultation and discussion between the client, therapist and the parents/legal guardian. Spurwink also offers these other specialized residential services:
