Day Services for Adults

Spurwink Day Services currently provides individualized support services to adults with autism and developmental disabilities at four sites in York and Cumberland Counties. These four sites offer a range of activities based on individual needs or choices. Activities may include: developmental training, pre-vocational training and community-based activities.

Limerick I and Limerick II Day Services

These two Day Services Programs share a rural 40-acre property that is also home to a flock of chickens and other barn animals, several cats, and offers plenty of space to explore, relax and relate. Limerick I serves adults with severe developmental disabilities with an emphasis on social skills training and community integration. Adults receive individualized support, assistance with daily living skills and the opportunity to engage in community activities such as outings to local fairs, area restaurants and ice cream stands.
Limerick II serves individuals who are able to engage in work-related activities. This program fosters work readiness, job skills and the ability to receive compensation for work done. Prevocational activities include wood harvesting (splitting, stacking, and delivering), lawn and grounds care on-site and in the community, animal husbandry, and woodworking projects. In both sites, the day-to-day tasks offer a backdrop and relevance for the teaching of life skills and coping strategies.

North Yarmouth Day Services

Located in rural North Yarmouth, this site offers individualized and group activities as well as a variety of work-related services such as contract work with local businesses and a paper recycling program. The recycling program requires participants to pick up paper at local schools and businesses, sort and shred it and prepare it for resale. In the summer months, grounds care and vegetable gardening are offered, with trips made to the Portland Farmer’s Market to sell goods. Each work task provides the opportunity for ongoing “real-life” teaching.

Portland Day Services

Portland Day Services has a community emphasis and offers training in a variety of areas related to socialization and the organization of time. Individualized plans address behavioral, sensory and cognitive areas of need. The program takes full advantage of its proximity to downtown Portland and all that the area offers: a busy commerce center, shopping malls, the coastline, a working fishing fleet, etc. Adults may participate in group or individualized community activities that can include museum trips, volunteer work, arts and crafts, ferry trips to local islands, a trip to the Planetarium and swimming at the YMCA.
