Working with Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Families

 Cultural competence is the ability to provide quality assistance to clients with diverse values, beliefs, or traditions, including tailoring the delivery of services to meet their social, cultural, and linguistic needs. It is a set of behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together, enabling the agency to work effectively in cross–cultural situations.

An article featuring The Game Loft was published on Psychology Today (http://psychologytoday.com). Live-action role-playing games teach young adults about working together, to think about consequences and learn about themselves. The unique ingredient to success is the safe environment and the adults who are tuned in to teaching these lessons.

The Christian Science Monitor featured an in-depth article about the impact on teens and young adults engaging in role-playing games. The members of the Game Loft, a community based organization of Spurwink, learn about community, cooperation and how to become contributing adult.

The Bridgton News featured a front page article about Danielle Young, a young woman in residential treatment at Spurwink's Casco Program who was honored by First Lady Karen Baldacci as a "Youth Who Inspires."

Reporter Josie Huang interviews Spurwink's Dr. Lawrence Ricci and others about the increase in Shaken Baby Syndrome in Maine. Ricci is Maine's only child abuse pediatrician.

Former Spurwink Client Gives Back

Steve Finkel arrived at Spurwink's first residential and educational program in Portland, Maine, as a 10-year-old boy in 1965. Today, he is a successful businessman who is giving back by serving on the agency's Board of Directors and connecting with both clients and staff.
