Spurwink Students Get Animated!

As part of the 2008 Artist in Residence Program, Spurwink was pleased to be able to bring Huey, an independent filmmaker, to the agency's Cummings School in Portland this spring. During the month of April, Spurwink students learned the art of clay animation, creating two short movies, one about the Circus and the other called, "Animals Got Talent."

The animation project introduced students to all aspects of clay animation from creating artwork and sets to filming, editing and adding soundtrack

"This was an outstanding program for our students," said Pam Sperry, Director of Educational Services. "They not only learned new skills, but gained the experience of working together to create a finished product that was both fun and entertaining."

Huey is a documentary filmmaker and has been introducing students and teachers to the art of moviemaking since 1976. He is currently Director of the Maine Student Film and Video Festival. In 2006, he was named one of the 10 most intriguing people in Maine by Portland Magazine.

The Artist-in-Residence Program is in its second year at Spurwink. In addition to clay animation, this year's program offered workshops in drumming, hip hop music, theatre and puppetry.
