Spurwink Therapeutic Couple Named Maine's Direct Support Professionals of the Year by National OrganizationANCOR Honors Outstanding Work to Improve the Lives of People with Disabilities Joyce and Mahlon Willis, a Therapeutic Couple with Spurwink Services, were recognized with the Maine Direct Support Professionals of the Year Award by ANCOR - the American Network of Community Options and Resources. “This recognition is a great reflection on Joyce and Mahlon's hard work and the quality services provided by Spurwink,” said Sue Murphy, Senior Program Director with Spurwink's Adult Services. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), who are often referred to as caregivers, personal assistants, or homecare aides, provide daily supports to millions of Americans with disabilities. People with disabilities are able to live better, more independent lives because of the supports they receive from DSPs. The Willises have worked for Spurwink for 15 years. As a Therapeutic Couple, they live in a community-based home with three residents, and are scheduled to work around the clock with scheduled time off during daytime hours and every other weekend. They are responsible for maintaining a home-like, caring, and safe environment and act as positive role models. “Joyce and Mahlon are compassionate, nurturing, loving and humble people who are truly deserving of national recognition,” said Sue Murphy. “When they came to Spurwink they had no real experience in the developmental disabilities field, but they had a very strong foundation - they were committed to each other, they wanted to use their strengths as a couple and work together, and they wanted to help others. They have done this and done it well, and for 15 long years have given of themselves unto others, and have deeply enriched the quality of life for the individuals they have supported.” “It is important to recognize the work done by the Willises and their colleagues across the country,' said Peter Kowalski, President of ANCOR. “Joyce and Mahlon Willis represent the best of the best among DSPs. Their commitment allows the people they serve to live more inclusive, independent, and self-determined lives.” ANCOR represents more than 850 private providers of community living and employment supports and services to more than 385,000 individuals with disabilities. Spurwink Services is a nationally accredited non-profit organization serving individuals who are facing emotional, behavioral and developmental challenges.
