Spurwink Students Help Fight Milfoil in Casco LakesWhen the Pleasant Lake/Parker Pond Association in Casco began to battle the milfoil problem in two area ponds, they found themselves short-handed. It was mid-September and area college students were off at school. "We contacted the Spurwink School in Casco and were able to get seven students to do the work," said Joel Bloom, an Association member. "A Spurwink teacher, Elaine Cummings, who is also a member of our Association, was in charge of the group." Since Cummings was familiar with the tasks, she was able to steer the students around any problems. She was impressed with the fine job the teens peformed. "They worked both Saturday and Sunday and asked if we could hire them next year," Bloom said. "We definitely said yes!" The Association recently received a $2,500 grant from The Maine Community Foundation for a 2007 spring and summer program to help contain or kill off milfoil in the ponds. Bloom says Spurwink students will be trained and hired to do the work. "Casco residents should be quite pleased at the fine progress Spurwink is making with their students," Bloom said.
