Adult Residential Services
Residential services are staff support services provided within a home. Hours can be intermittent, or around-the-clock. Usually, intermittent hours are provided in an individual's own home or apartment, with a certain number of hours provided per day or week, as needed. Round-the-clock services occur in agency operated homes with two, three, or four individuals sharing a home. Many of the Spurwink homes are staffed by 'therapeutic couples' who also live in the home a majority of the time. This staffing model has been very beneficial for individuals who require structure, predictability, consistency, and development of long-term relationship. Many of our couples have worked in our homes with the same individuals for over 5 years, and several over 10 years. An alternative to this staffing model is a shift staff model, in which staff are assigned shifts at different times and days. For both models, it is the role of the staff to help engage individuals in their communities, to assist with development of social relationships, to provide support in areas. of activities of daily living, such as shopping, doing laundry, cooking , planning menus, etc. Adult residential services are currently being provided in Brunswick, Portland, Westbrook, Scarborough, Standish, Buxton, and Limerick.
Inviduals receiving either residential or community support services are funded by DHHS, MaineCare Waiver Funding, either Section 21, the Comprehensive Waiver, or Section 29.
Referrals are made by DHHS, the Office of Adults with Cognitive and Physical Disabilities (OACPD).
