Community Support Services
Spurwink provides residential and community support services for adults with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder who are 18 years of age and older. Spurwink makes every effort to meet individual needs and incorporates a person centered planning process for each person.
Community Support services are provided during the days that engage an individual in their community. These services are available Monday through Friday for approximately 4 - 5 hours per day, usually between the hours of 9am and 2pm.
The program focuses on individual skill building that relates to community inclusion, such as learning safety skills, enhancing social skills, how to access community resources, learning problem solving strategies, and development of peer relationships. Groups and/or individuals engage in the resources of their local communities, and may volunteer at a local food bank, engage in physical fitness activities such as swimming, hiking, walking, going to a gym, etc., go to local malls, stores and shops, or participate in individual activities of their choice such as therapeutic horseback riding, using a computer, or going to the library. these services were formally referred to as "day programs." Spurwink currently has community support sites in Limerick, Westbrook, and North Yarmouth.
Individuals receiving community support services are funded by DHHS, MaineCare Waiver Funding, either Section 21, the Comprehensive Waiver, or Section 29 (for some individuals receiving community support).
Referrals are made by DHHS, the Office for Adults with Cognitive and Physical Disabilities (OACPD).
