Mental Health Diagnoses & Classroom Implications
This curriculum reviews the most common mental health diagnoses schools are faced with today, and recommends practical strategies. Learn characteristics of various diagnoses: the signs, & best ways to cope in a class setting: the suggestions.
ADD/ADHD in the Classroom
This session discusses primary characteristics of ADD/ADHD, and provides recommendations for impacting learning and behavior. Learn recommendations for establishing a proper learning environment, best ways to give instructions & assignments to a child with ADD/ADHD, management of ADD/ADHD behavior, and how to provide appropriate accommodations.
De-Escalation Strategies
This workshop addresses effective ways of defusing a crisis situation, providing a model to guide the process that dovetails with PBS.
In this workshop, participants will learn:
The basic principles of crisis stabilization
Important factors in the selection of de-escalation strategies
What to do when & why (e.g., sensory & emotional interventions)
Assessing the effectiveness of selected strategies
Fostering Resiliency/Avoiding Learned Helplessness
This program explores the relationship between learned helplessness and resiliency, and presents options for accessing and impacting both internal and external protective factors, including locus of control.
In this workshop, participants will earn:
The characteristics and language of resiliency
Barriers to resiliency
How to help a student identify and build critical assets
Response to Intervention: Working with RTI
With RTI, schools identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes, monitor their progress and provide evidence-based interventions, then adjust those interventions depending on the students’ responsiveness.
Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)
Through prevention strategies, behavior management, communication techniques, and non-confrontational limit-setting, TCI can prevent crises from occurring. This approach provides strategies to effectively manage acute crisis phases, reduces potential and actual injury to children and staff, and provides constructive ways to handle stressful situations. Prevention and de-escalation of a potential crisis situation with a child or young person, safety and therapeutic management of a crisis situation and skills to help children and young people improve their coping strategies.
Positve Behavioral Supports for the Classroom
IDEA requires that we assess students’ challenging behaviors and develop positive behavioral interventions to address them. This approach focuses on eliminating challenging behaviors, replacing them with pro-social behaviors, and identifying and reinforcing unique student competencies. PBS encompasses individualized planning and support, classroom-level management, and even whole-school interventions; it concentrates on modifying environmental factors in order to impact student behaviors.
Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders
