Spurwink Services, among the largest providers of educational and behavioral health services in Maine and the Northeast, announces the launch of Spruce Point, self-determined housing choice, assisting adults with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and other developmental delays to live apart from their families.

“Once young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder reach 18 or 22, choices for continued skill building, community integration and other life enriching activities become limited. Spruce Point bridges this gap in services and offers these adults an engaging and stimulating lifestyle opportunity regardless of physical or developmental capabilities,” explains Dawn Stiles, LCSW, and President of Spurwink Services.

Spurwink Services modeled Spruce Point after residential services provided to a small group of parents in Maine including a mother of a 28 year old man with autism. “I had always imagined my son would live with my husband and me forever,” explains Mrs. Walters. “To me Justin was living a good and fulfilling life. Then my daughter came home for a visit and pointed out to me that it was time to consider an alternate living arrangement for Justin. I approached Spurwink to create a program that was tailored to meet Justin’s needs. Today, Justin lives in a comfortable home of his own. A therapeutic couple lives with him and offers opportunities for growth and independent living I never thought were possible.”

Spruce Point is a residential model that includes support services for a broad range of adults, including: young adults transitioning into adulthood, middle aged adults ready to live apart from family and seniors who require ongoing supervision and socialization.

The Spruce Point staff-to-resident ratio is high. The resident’s needs dictate the staffing ratio which can range from 2:1 to 2:4. The care approach is evidence-based and supported by almost 50 years of experience developing and managing residential programs for both children and adults.

“At Spruce Point we provide supportive services that enhance life. Our approach to care is the practice of using each human interaction as an opportunity for personal discovery and growth in the adult years of life,” adds Sonia Garcia, MBA, PhD, Director of Clinical Business Development for Spruce Point.
