Spurwink's Lawrence Ricci Honored by Child Abuse Prevention Advocates

Lawrence Ricci, M.D., was honored on May 5, 2009 with the Statewide Advocate Award from the Maine Children's Trust. Dr. Ricci was one of five individuals selected for the organization's 2009 Annual Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Recognition Awards. The awards were presented at a special event held at the Senator Inn and Spa in Augusta.

Dr. Ricci is a child abuse pediatrician and co-director of Spurwink's Child Abuse Program. Upon accepting the award, Dr. Ricci told the audience: "This honor must also include all of those medical, child welfare and law enforcement professionals who struggle to understand the ravages of child abuse day in and day out, and at the same time, minister to those children and families so affected."

Citing the increase in child abuse here in Maine, Dr. Ricci stated: "Never forget that we saw 250 high severity physical abuse cases in Maine in 2006, 300 in 2007 and 350 in 2008."

Dr. Ricci also spoke of the work being done in Maine to prevent abusive head trauma in infants. "The work we have done in Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention has been the most gratifying prevention work of my career."

Established in 1994, the Spurwink Child Abuse Program was developed in response to the demand in Maine for expert diagnostic and treatment services for children who may have been abused. Program staff have particular expertise in the assessment and treatment of children for abuse. More information about the program.
