Director of Spurwink’s Portland Help Center earns prestigious nursing award
Sister Consuela White Spirit of Nursing Award honors Catherine Lorello-Snow, RNC
PORTLAND, Maine—Catherine Lorello-Snow, RN-BC, Director of Spurwink’s Portland Help Center, has been awarded the 2010 Sister Consuela White Spirit of Nursing Award by the Maine Chapter of the American Nurses Association.
The award, presented at a ceremony held at The Senator Inn in Augusta on Thursday, April 29, recognizes a Registered Nurse who exemplifies the spirit of nursing through the care, concern, respect and knowledge that he or she demonstrates in all interactions with patients, families, coworkers, students, the profession, and the community.
“Catherine embodies the qualities of Sister Consuela White,” said Dawn Stiles, President of Spurwink. “She deals skillfully with complex issues and ambiguous situations, always seeking and valuing the input of others. She is unwavering in her goal to provide exemplary, compassionate and continuous care to her patients, and she leads her team at Portland Help Center toward this goal by example.”
Ms. Lorello-Snow was recognized for her 30 years of service as a psychiatric nurse and administrator, during which time she has had a profound impact on thousands of individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses who otherwise might have been lost on the streets, or in the mental health or corrections systems.
Together with Dr. Stanley Block, she founded the Portland Help Center in 1990, with the mission of providing clinically excellent, compassionate, outpatient psychiatric services for people suffering from serious and persistent mental illnesses, in order to help them enjoy a fulfilling, independent and stable life in the community.
Winning this award brings a tremendous sense of accomplishment for Ms. Lorello-Snow, who once trained under Sister Consuela White.
“Iam honored to be mentioned in the same breath as Sister,” said Catherine Lorello-Snow. “I will spend the remainder ofmy days of nursing at PHC providing my patients with that same care, concern, respect, and honesty—and passing it on to other nurses, as Sister has done in her lifetime.”
Originally a 6-month pilot project, the Portland Help Center is now celebrating its 20th year in business, a testament to Ms. Lorello-Snow’s tenacity, her tremendous work ethic and, above all, her commitment to her clients.
